Evaluation Q1 -3

Q1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Eval Q1
View more presentations from Priya.

Q2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My magazine appeals to the Younger target audience due to the genre and the appealing to the younger audience. In my main article young people are not stereotyped as they aren't "hoodies" but my interview does contain colloquialism to show the readers they are real people and because they are young they can relate to them. I have subverted the stereotyping of young people as the interview is about awaring people of the current issues not just about partying, smoking and drinking. I have also used adolenscenes on my magazine to appeal to the target audience as well as throughout the magazine. I have used the uses of computer skills and by using the polaroid shots I have yet again targeted the Younger Audience.

Q3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I have chosen IPC Media as they are connected to NME and NME is similar to my music magazine because of the music genre. I would also choose them because they know what type of magazine NME is and they would also help me with my magazine as they have the experience and also deliver magazines that can also be niche and mainstream. My audience would also see me with IPC Media because NME is associated with them making my magazine mainstream as well.

Evaluation Q4 - 7

Q4) Who would be your audience for your media product?
My target group is mainly from 14- 24 year old as they mainly tend to stick to couple types of music genre rather than the older age as they listen to any music genre. I have also chosen a younger target group as i have researched this using my Audience questionnaire and most of the people i had asked my questions were mostly the younger age and liked my music magazine.

My target audience would mostly be students as they would still be in school or in university. Their interests would probably be watching films, going out, music, technology such as mobiles, PlayStation's, Nintendo Wii's, Xbox and the Internet. The type of Physographic's are Succeeders. Succeeders are the people who have money and the life but don't need to show off. These are my target audience as they can afford to buy things but don't need to show off.

Q5) How did you attract/address your audience?
On my front cover i have used direct mode of address as the artists are staring at the camera which means they would be staring at the audience engaging their attention and making sure they look at the magazine or persuading them to buy it. I have also used bright colours to attract the audience and highlighting the Main cover line and freebies in white to make sure they stand out.

The language devices i have used are colloquial as I wanted my readers to feel closer and relaxed when reading the article. I have also used slang on my contents page to make the synopsis short and easy to read. I have used slang in the introduction on my contents to also make the readers feel comfortable and relaxed than using formal text which they wouldn't understand. I also wanted to attract my younger audience by using slang as it would be more easier and comfortable for them.

The models i have used throughout my magazine are dressed casually rather than formal ware as I wanted them to feel relaxed and also attract the younger audience as they would relate to them and be inspired to copy the artists style. I have offered freebies which include free downloads and posters to appeal to my audience and promote my magazine. Used convential language such 'Exclusive, Gossip, Jam Packed and Exciting' to invite my audience in by using superlatives to also attract my audience. I have used bold, large fonts to catch the readers eye or attention and make them look at my magazine and persuading them to buy it.

My models are in a comfortable postition in all shots to make audience and them feel relaxed when looking at the photos to show they had fun doing the interview and the photoshoot rather than stiff, fixed poses which would seem unnatural and boring. I have used the pose on the front cover to also show the models were relaxed and easy going, the pose of them holding hands would also relate to thier friendship.

Q6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Q7) Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at my preliminary i feel as if i did not put enough effort in and i made the magazine look plain and boring. The photo used is not a direct address which would not attract an audience when looking at the magazine. I have used mainy colours showing the magazine has no colour scheme and the masterhead is not striking, the colour is bold but also does not relate to the picture or colour scheme. The coverlines are messy and the different text shows lack of simplicity and the front cover is plain and boring. The contents is plain with the use of colour which does not refer back to the front cover. There are no images and the text is all squished together showing that this is just rushed. The introduction is boring and not exciting. There are no superlatives which would attract the audience.

My final courseowrk shows creativity, simplicity and precision. I have learnt a lot as you can see with my magazine especially using Photoshop and finding out my target audience. I have planned out what i want my magazine to consist of and also show neatness and precision used when conducting my magazine. I have shown a variation of ideas such as the colour scheme, photos being used and the text.

Screen Shots Of Magazine

This is the presentation of my screen shots when creating my music magazine on Adobe Photoshop.

Audio Focus Questions

Here is the link to my audio questions.
I have asked an 19 year old and a 15 year old my focus questions.

http://www.zshare.net/download/746060969542ad5c/

http://www.zshare.net/download/746061661ab92cc7/

I have used audio questions because I wanted to see how different people would respond to my music magazine as well as tell me what my magazine should consist of or what would interest them into buying a music magazine.

I had chosen the title Big Bang Monthly as Big Bang is onomatopoeic as seen in Clash magazine. I have also used the idea of initials used in NME to make my masterhead stand out more and easy to read or see when looking at my magazine rather than Big Bang Monthly as my masterhead. I have used this but below my masterhead to show what BBM stands for.

I think the most important feature in a music magazine should consist of new music, up to date music, new artists or bands, events or gigs, chart posititons and interviews of the artists featured on the front page. When asking people about the features in a music magazine they had agreed and said this would attract more audiences outside of the target audience.

I had chosen blue, black, red and white as these colours are mainly associated with inidie music and it refers to British music and these colours also stand out as I had put the front cover image as black and white.

The main article should consist of photo's, question' about the artist's life, extra information about them, events or gigs they would appear in, new tracks or albums and should be easy to read with slang for readers to feel they can relate to them and show the artists are relaxed and easy going. When asking this question the people agreed as the interview should be fun, easy to read and able to make you feel invited .

When reading a music magazine, what inspires me is knowing that the artists or bands featured are real people who are down to earth not obsssed with money or fame and can do normal things such as go out and shop as well as fashion or knowing you can make music to.

What would make me want to buy a music magazineis who is on the front cover, the sell lines, quotes from articles inside, freebies or if any artists or bands i like are featuring in the magazine.

Screen Shots Of Magazine

I had done some screenshots of my music magazine; the front cover which includes a plain shot, grid shot and the image being used on the front cover.

The grid is used to make sure all the text and images are in place and in line with each other and to also that the text are all in place and in line. The grid also showed how clear the text and image would come out without the grid as well as show the simplicity and clearness of the front cover.

The plain image also shows the text and images without the grid to show the text is in place and also matches in line with everything else. The only image used is teh barcode which is also inline with the price and date issue. The front cover has also changed from before as the text and images have moved from the sketches and the other screen shot of the front cover.

Diplomats Son Article

This is the article for the two page spread on the band Diplomat's Son which is featured in my music magazine.

Media Article
Diplomat’s Son - Back Brave and Bloodthirsty!

Media Article
Diplomat’s Son - Back Brave and Bloodthirsty!

When BBM found out they were interviewing Diplomat’s Son the inspiring band that sings about real issues not just love, sex and money we were excited to even see them in the flesh let alone speaking to them up close and personal. We found out the band is not cocky, rude or sarcastic; they are genuine, humble and down to earth. Their name enthused by a song also tells the tale of two lives just wanting to show audiences that music is positive and not just another song with catchy lyrics.

BBM first heard of the famous double act; Blake Green & Nate Archibald, when we saw them at a gig in Somerset House trying to please the audience through the rain and they managed successfully. The band with precision, played and explained what each song was about, but it was tough to imagine these neat and tidy-looking London students really breaking through to the large-scale audiences that seemed to inevitably await their early hype. Both of them together are the most amazing pair and show a friendship which we all seek. I must say they are rather diplomatic don’t you think?

BBM: Your single It’s Never About You is quite deep and controversial what is it all about and why did you choose to make this your first hit?

DS: That track honestly is about drugs and showing its not all what’s its cracked up to be. Excuse the pun. Really it’s so deep and controversial like you say because we know first hand what drugs can do to you and the effects it has on other people that care about you. And for the record no we don’t take drugs besides the odd Paracetamol but our good friend took drugs because of peer pressure and getting in with the wrong crowd. It was shocking and devastating finding out how and why he died, so it actually made us want to tell someone the stupidity of drugs being “cool” and illustrate that people are there for you and drugs are really not the answer. It’s controversial because people misread that song as emphasising people to take drugs when we’re clearly not; we’re just trying to aware.

BBM: What’s been your most amazing collective experience since the band formed?

DS: Nate and some of my really close mates and family had surprised me at home with a HUGE birthday party because I thought no body remembered so I was pissed off when only one person wished me, and that was my Graphics teacher. I came home feeling so crap and I went to see my mum, to see if she’d remembered and they all screamed SURPRISE I was literally happy I started crying. Then the party started getting in the mood and my mum gave me this huge box which looked like one of those boxes you could fit a washing machine in. Everyone was staring and thinking what is it or better yet how much? So I opened it and it was Sam Lively from Two x Two and she was holding a pair of Nike high-tops that I really wanted it was the best day and I kept on getting the most funniest and incredible presents. I was in awe when Sam started talking to me because she is incredible and yes she did perform in my back garden which was trashed after everyone went. She stayed until it was about two in the morning helping with clearing it was the most surreal experience and I would want to relive that day over and over again.

BBM: Wow, that sounds fun; I wish I could have been there. So, what do you think about people calling your band the next big thing?

DS: The next big thing, really it’s quite flattering, and it's nice to hear, but you don't want it to go so far that it's not about the music. I don't want people like us for the wrong reasons. But I think people aren't stupid. They can see through it and realise that they do actually like us. But otherwise the fame is okay for now.

BBM: Getting back to music, what’s different about you and your songs?

DS: We’re different because we tackle issues that concern everyone in everyday life such as drugs, abuse even environmental issues. Yes, we’re passionate because kids especially in our area aren’t really concerned for the better of tomorrow its more like living in the present. Our songs are here to show people that we’re not the average band or students we do actually care about issues and if you think different stick it!

Nate: Our songs are to inspire and aware but to show that everyone does go through these issues even if they’re not apart of it they should know to show that there are consequences for your own actions and it affects all sorts of people. The whole issue with It’s Never About You is about the mourning of our friend and showing how pissed off and angry we are about stupid idiots getting someone to do drugs and pressuring them.

BBM: Your second single which is out now Deep Intuition, that’s about abuse or violence am I right?

DS: Yeah, that was one of my favourite songs to play and write because even though both of us aren’t really affected by abuse or violence there are thousands of people going through it who don’t speak up and its frightening knowing that people go through it alone and we had an assembly on it and it was really shocking obviously because of the violence but the speakers were all abused in some way which was really scary.

BBM: What genre would you describe you music as because it’s so diverse and beautifully composed?

DS: Genre, well it’s a complete mix because each song on our album is a different appeal if you get me, Its Never About You is more garage and bass where as Just Incase is more classical and instrumental. Our music ranges but most tracks on our album are Indie or Punk Rock. Thank you for the compliment though.

BBM: Your first album was released a couple months ago and your second it’s on its way, have you began ideas for the third?

DS: We actually have (laughs) we’ve only written two tracks though. But I think we’re just giving it a rest because we want to promote our second album Sky’s Above rather than rush into the third and release it. We want people to give us a chance with our music than needing to listen to it to find out what we’re about.

Sky’s Above the fresh exciting new exciting album by Diplomat’s Son is one of those albums that would never get old or annoying. Buy it now from HMV, I-TUNES and Amazon. With the glowing success this album is worth your savings. To see the band live go to ticketmaster.com for their tours starting in April and their brand new track; Maybe That’s Me is out on 30th March.

Front Cover

Heres a screen shot of my front cover without the main image to show the fonts and the colours. The front cover also has 4 colours to show simplicity and the background is white because i want the main image to stand out.

I have made changes on the front as i have changed the name of the main cover line as there was a band called the Diplomats so i changed it to Diplomats Son.

Font Screen Shots

The fonts that are featured are downloaded front dafont.com
Here are screen shots of the different fonts for my masterhead and some of the fronts are also used within the front cover. The masterhead is in red as i wanted the masterhead to be striking and bold and also eye catching when audiences look at this magazine. I also chose red, blue and black within the magazine and on my front cover and within my magazine as red and black mostly dominate indie magazine. I have also labelled the the fonts to refer back to when analysing my front cover.

Analysis of Different Contents

The contents we had to analyse were NME, VIBE and Drummer which are three different magazines that cover different music genres. The NME is covered, cluttered and feature a lot of information when compared to Vibe and Drummer.

NME contents page show the contents listed on the right hand side that is in alphabetical order in terms of Bands. The use of red and black relate to the magazines colours and the main coverline also relate to the main image which is featured on the contents. The main coverline is in bold, simple easy to read and capitals to attract the audience and the use of the red text showing the page number refers the audience to what page the article is on. The contents is also split up into subheadings which is also easier to the audience and font consistency matches the masterhead and front cover. The articles also have a little synopsis which tells the audience what the article or feature is about. The use of arrows also made the audience more attracted.
The use of the advertising subscription promote the magazine therefore gaining a wider target audience and the use of yellow also attracts the audience more when flicking through the magazine. The arrow at the bottom is highlighted in red to show the colour consistency and the use of typography is also the same.

The Vibe contents are simple, yet subverts the normal concept of magazine content pages.

The title/master head which is the contents goes against the normal concepts of a magazines contents page. The use of simple colours, main image and typography shows a more relaxed and less sophisticated side to Vibe. The contents are split into subheadings which are a different typography and the use of the page numbers which are placed on the right hand side rather than the normal concepts.

The main image is simple, plain and matches with the grey and black image on the front cover. The use of the main image is very dominant as it covers the whole page and there is not a main cover line.

The other cover lines featured show the rest of the contents and also show a synopsis which is also featured in NME. The additional image is of the front cover to remind the readers and audience and to also relate the contents to the front cover. The background also differs from general block colours and the typography matches the main image.

The Drummer contents are simple and easy to navigate around when reading the contents on the left hand side. The features are highlighted in red and grabs readers attention and the use of the drummer which is also the masterhead is also featured in the contents.

The main image which is in black and white relates to the magazines brand colours and the main image is bigger than the other additional images to show dominance and to relate to the exclusive interview. The use of the page numbers which are placed on the right hand side of the images and the contents show the sophistication of the magazine and the simplistic style is linked to the style of the magazine and identify's the magazines brand.

The contents listed links with the additional images around the page. The use of synopsis explains what the articles are about. he whole contents page is in line with each other, neat and simple and sophistacted which subverts the normal contents of a drummer magazine.

XXL Anaysis

For class work and homework we were assigned to analyse the front cover of XXL magazine and explain the conventions and explore this into further details.

XXL Magazine is the magazine that is aimed mostly at the older target audience and covers hip hop and RnB. The magazine's unique selling point is the master head which is "blinged out" in diamonds to convey the magazines wealth or the comparing of bling to the music genre. The master head which is in a red background also may connote the wealth for example the reference to the red carpet or just the magazines brand colours.
The puff/slogan above the master head "A Decade Of Dominance" uses alliteration to allow the audience to remember the puff as the slogan is catchy and short.
The typography which differs to connote the celebration of the 10th anniversary which is in cursive/fancy font to also show the readers or passers by the more sophisticated side to the magazine. The bold and simple typography allow audiences or passers by to catch the magazine and see who is featured in the magazine and the use of colour is also linked in with the magazines colours and the main image.
The main cover line is Baby & Lil Wayne which are well known within the Hip Hop scene and also relate to the main image as they have their tops off showing their top half of their bodies to link to the main cover line. The cover line is also a pun as "survival of the fittest" may go into further detail if you read the article. The pun is also a persuasive device that allows the audience to read or buy the magazine.
The main image of Baby and Lil Wayne is dominant as the camera angle is dominant. The use of the main image being topless which relates to the main sell line is important as it also persuades readers or passers by to buy the magazine or read it. The main image shows teh rappers posed as if they were "chilling" to show the relaxed side of the artists and the use of the "bling" - jewellery is connting thier wealth as there is a lot of jewellery and the bling also relates back to the magazine.
The image also shows the "toughness" and "hard" appeal to the audience as they show thier tattoo's which also cost a lot of money therefore again connoting thier wealth. The image also confirms stereotypes of Hip Hop and subverts it at the same time. The image confirms the sterotype as the artists show off thier wealth through jewellery and tattoos and the use of the background show the audience that its not just a photoshoot but also goes into further detail of the artists. The image also subverts the stereotypes as teh image could be seen as a homoerotic image that appeals to thier audience with the use of Baby having his hand around Lil Wayne which is not mainly seen within the Hip Hop scene as they mainly relate to the toughness and bravery. This also attracts a wider audience as a hetrosexual person may believe the image to be showing friendship and support whereas a homosexual person may read the image to be targeting the wider audience therefore causing the audience to not read the article on the internet even though the website is underneath the main coverline.
The other coverlines are bold, simple and easy to read which allow audiences to see the artists featured in the in magazine and the use of listing different artists show the wider target audience as a person might not be intrested in 50 cent but might be interested in Nelly. The list of artists also attract the audiences that are intrested in thier artists or Hip Hop.
The other coverline which is at the top right show a mix of typography; the use of cursive font to promote the sophisticated side to the magazine, the bold, simple lettering to catch the audiences attention and the italics to emphasise the magazines celebration. The colours also relate to the magazine celebration as the silver is used throughout the front cover.

Contrast Of Music Magazines to Fashion Magazines

For homework I had got set to list the presentation devices of NME and a fashion magazine of my choice. I chose Teen Vouge ( February 2010) and showed listed the differences the fashion magazine has when compared to a music magazine.

NME Presentaional Devices

Master Head is large, dominant, bold and appealing. Use of colour is played throughout the front cover, Master head is brand's identity.

Main coverline - related to main image as the interview is about them and the use of colour shows the brands identity as well as colour scheme.

Sell Lines- Left hand side, same typography, colour and size show the features included in the magazine and the use of black typography is almost the synposis. They are also not covering the main image.

No free gifts but NME includes gig dates and festivals.

Addtional Information- another sell line at the top and in captials to attract audiences and once again colour scheme is consistent.

Background- is the main images background and uses block colours.

Teen Vogue Presentational Devices

Master Head- Two fonts, Two colours to contrast the younger audience (Teen) and the older more mature audience (Vogue), referencing to Vogue which appeals to the older audience. Also covers top page rather than just the top left like most magazines.

Main Image- Jessica Szohr who is is Gossip Girl which is also about fashion. The main image also relates to the colours used on the front page to show the season.

Main coverline- Use of different typography relates to the different topics covered in the interview but the main coverline is not dominant unless you know who Jessica Szohr is.

Sell Lines - Dominant due to size of typography and the different fonts, the use of colours also relate to the different topics.

Free Gifts- Are stated on the front cover and in the contents and includes competitions.

Additional Information- The sell lines try not to block the main image of Jessica and the barcode is in the bottom left rather than the botton right when compared to NME. The background is the background image of Jessica and the colours relate to the font colours.

Teen Vogue covers all aspects of fashion, life, music, beauty and health as well as exclusive interviews. There are much more competitions and freebies offered in Teen Vogue that appeals to thier target audience which is mainly girls of a younger age or boys intrested in fashion.

There are much more fashion related advertisements than NME and the main features are completelty different when compared to NME. The main image which is Jessica Szohr who stars in Gossip Girl , talks about her life, fashion and her love life to co-star Ed Westwick who also stars in Gossip Girl, compared to NME's main feature which is The Last Shadow Puppets - Alex Turner and Miles Kane who are both from different bands and well known within the indie scene.

The disadvantages of buying NME is the magazine mainly covers indie music rather than covering more niche music genres that appeal to all audience rather than thier target audience which is young students. You also have to be intrested in gigs and festivals as well as the main topics listed on the front page or contents. The disadvantages of buying Teen Vouge is that it does mainly appeal to teen girls and boys who are intrested in fashion. Teen Vogue also covers fashion thats is mostly expensive and beauty and health which does not feature in NME. Teen Vogue has divided it's contents based on the subheadings rather than one page for the contents.

Q Presentational Devices

For this piece of work i will note the presentational devices that are being used in the Q Magazine.

The Master Head: Placed in the top-left corner which is bold and clear to emphasis the brands identity as the Q is consistent when looking at previous covers. The master head is bold, and stands out to catch audience's attention as well as establishing the brands identity.

Main Image: REM, Bjork and Rufus Wainwright are the 3 figures but REM stands out more as he is in front of the other 2 figures. The main image ties in with the exclusive interview which is noted in the cover lines on the left. The use of the direct contact between the main image is clever due to the grabbing of audiences attention or passers by to make sure they pick up the magazine or buy it.

Additional Images: Pete Doherty to link in with the other interview or feature of him within the magazine.

Main Cover Line: The main cover line is linked in with the cover lines but we see the difference due to the size of the font. The font is in gold to maybe show a celebration within the magazine and the use of gold is also linked to the colour of Bjork's dress. There are many different font types but the colours are the magazines identity and the use of colours also show the magazines colour scheme. The main cover line is also bigger than the rest of the other texts to emphasise the main article in the magazine and linked to the main image to also grab readers attention. It is also bold, eye catching and appealing.

Target Audience: Mainly the older audience as the magazine covers more music genres' rather than sticking to one main genre. This links in with the older audience as they prefer to listen to more genres than the younger audience who mainly listens to one main genre.

Coverlines: In black font to show the artists/ bands who are featuring in the magazine and the gold to emphasise the other features.

The front cover overall does grab the readers or passers by attention due to the direct contact of the main image and the use of the big font representing the main coverline also grabs attention as the main cover line is highlighted in black to also match the colour scheme of the magazine. .
The main image is also covered in coverlines. The use of the one additional image and the floating quote also shows what else is featured in the magazine than just the coverlines.
